Profile Information

About Me:
Russell Pensyl (MFA 88, BFA 85) is an American media artist and designer. His work maintains a strategic focus on communication, narrative, and user centric design processes for interactive and communication media. Pensyl was pioneer in the design and creation of interactive media as early as 1983. Pensyl owned and two companies in digital media from 1988 until 2003 that designed and created films and interactive media for Fortune 500 companies such as Apple Computer, IBM, Motorola, Kodak, Adobe Systems, Sony, Disney, Pearson Education, JCPenney, WebTV, 3Com, PalmPilot, American Airlines, Lucent Technologies and others. In 2002, Pensyl refocused his creative activities to research and artistic interactive installations. This began with an animated immersive underwater environmental installation presented in the Art Gallery in SIGGRAPH 2002.

Pensyl’s current work includes the creation of location based entertainment using virtual characters set real-world environments using new tracking technologies in mixed and augmented reality. In 2008 Pensyl’s mixed reality installation “The Long Bar” was a Curator Invited Installation into the SIGGRAPHAsia Synthesis – Curated Show/Art Gallery in SIGGRAPHAsia in Singapore. Recently, research in the use of facial recognition technology, positioning and augmented reality annotation is resulting in commercially viable communication technologies as well as user centric, autonomously responsive systems using biometric data in interactive installations. One recent work, created in 2010, explores the “subtle presence” autonomously responsive media in an interactive installation that presents a dynamic time lapse still-life painting that shifts subtly, caused by sensing personal characteristics of the viewer in the exhibition space,

Pensyl was a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Art and Communication Design in the School of Visual Art at the University of North Texas, located near Dallas Texas from 1990 until 2000. In 2000, Pensyl join the Department of Arts at the William Paterson University of New Jersey as an Associate Professor of Digital Art and Animation.

In 2003, Pensyl joined School of Software and Microelectronics at Beijing University in the Peoples Republic of China as Acting Chair and Director of Computer Animation. In Beijing, Pensyl designed and implemented the some of the first comprehensive graduate programs in digital media at a major university in China.

In 2004, Pensyl was recruited as the founding Executive Vice Dean in the School of Art, Design and Media] at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He was the first full time faculty member and worked to implement seven BFA degree programs in animation, filmmaking, interactive design, game design, communication design, product design and photography. In 2006, Pensyl became Director of the Interaction and Entertainment Research Center and later Co-Director of the Institute for Media Innovation. These university level research centers work focused at the intersection of art, science, design and technology. The Centers projects encompassed the sciences, technology, education, design and entertainment together with real world applications of designed product, new media applications and culturally relevant artistic experiences.

In 2010, Pensyl returned to the USA to join Northeastern University as full Professor and Chair of the Department of Art+Design.
Why do you want to join the Boston Cyberarts network?
as an interactive media artist and designer i seek opportunities to develop conversation with other artsts designers and academics working in this area. additionally i seek ways to expand the abilities for students from A+D at Northesatern to learn more about interactive media and cyber arts.
