Profile Information

About Me:
Jacquelyn Ford Morie is a Senior Researcher at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), working in virtual worlds and game technologies with a focus on their convergence. Before ICT, she spent six years in the animation and effects industry in Hollywood, creating specialized training programs for both traditional and digital aspects of production. From 1990 to 1994, she worked as an artist, researcher and educator at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. While there, she art directed an adventure game for the United States Navy designed to tech incoming recruits the basics of electronics and circuitry. This game had an AI-based mentor, which would appear when the player was having trouble with a particular concept. She also helped lead a group of after-hours students called the “Toy Scouts,” who created full-body immersive Virtual Reality games using research technology developed for other projects.

Most recently Jacki has been involved in creating, playing and researching innovative and gender-neutral games. The game collective, Ludica (www.ludica.org.uk), for which she was one of four co-founders, has hosted game play workshops at the SIGGRAPH and DIGRA (Digital Games Research Association) conferences, and published numerous papers on the subject of gender and games. With Ludica she co-authored a chapter for the 2008 book Beyond Barbie and Mortal Combat – a critical assessment of the state of gender and games. She contributed a chapter to the 2008 book Computer Games and Team and Individual Learning, edited by Dr. Harry O’Neil. She has been an invited participant in many NSF-sponsored game workshops, including Beyond Barbie, held at UCLA in 2006, Gender Quest, at Harvey Mudd College in 2004, and Productive Play: The Convergence of Work and Play in Online Games and Virtual Worlds at UC Irvine in 2008. Additionally, she has spoken at many international venues on the subject of games for experiential learning, including as a keynote speaker at the 2008 London Games Week.

Jacki Morie is a long-standing member of, and served on the Executive Council for, ACM SIGGRAPH. She is also a member of the International Visual Effects Society (VES), the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA), the International Woman and Games group, and the International Society of Presence Research (ISPR). She earned her doctorate on theories of space and embodiment in immersive virtual environments with SMARTlab in 2007.

She is currently working in the online world Second Life, trying to do good for the real world.
